I forgot what you have now.

Do it.
What's the worst that can happen? You only live once after all

The worst is that I have to give up my beloved Eva. But I know it'll be worth it, because I really really want that 2002 and Eva is kinda a bitch some times. But it still makes me sad to give up a car.

You'll always have the memories, and you'll end up with a 2002 to create a whole new set of them

Only trade if you have another dependable car.

This is my DD. Don't have another car to drive to work.

Yes, I know... I'll get over it eventually...

Tough call man.
Tough call.
If you do trade, please leave a note under the back seat that says,
"SOON.

I will do this.
What would you do?
![]() 02/12/2014 at 19:03 |

At least give it a test drive and thorough going through.

Definitely. Will be checking for rust on strut towers and other vulnerable points. That being good, I think I might trade him. We know I love Eva, but this seems like an upwards trade and I can always buy a nice e36 when I'm rich... someday... right?

What has cheaper parts/insurance? Does the 2002 have hardened valve seats for unleaded oil?
![]() 02/12/2014 at 20:46 |

Insurance should be cheaper on the 2002, slightly. Parts seem cheaper, easier to get to. The engine is a rebuilt M10, which is from the early 318 (I think) so it should be all right, but I am asking some questions so I'll throw that in.
The other thing is that it would be way easier to sell the 2002 if I don't want it than a '95 M3 such as mine.

I DD my 2k2 in the summer, if you live in a cold area I wouldn't recommend DDing it. It's a bitch to warm up.

Eh, it's not that cold up here. It would be garaged anyhow. We should drop below 38 degrees at night again.
So you have one of these.... aside from rust in the important points, what do I look for? They seem simple enough.

If the engine is newer than the mid 70's it'll be good on fuel. But, yeah just drive it and if trust your heart.

Check rust at the rear shock towers, inside the front fenders, and along the skirts. Obviously a good test drive will reveal how the tranny is doing. Other than that is honestly just seals that need to be checked. I was lucky and bought a California car (I live in MD) that an old lady owned. Had 67K miles when I bought it, so literally, no problems. Here's a good article from Hemmings about purchasing a 2002. Honestly, at $5k the car is a great buy and it is way more practical that anyone would think. Very spacious, easy to maintain, cheap to operate, and fun to drive. You should be fine, but I would try and find a mechanic that knows what he's looking at before you buy. I am 19 and didn't grow up with a great knowledge in mechanics. Luckily my mechanic knows 2k2s like the back of his hand.

Will do. If he decides he wants Eva, that is.

Well, if he wants my car in trade it will be a fantastic deal as I'd have a hard time selling my car for $3,500. I'd buy it for $5,000 in a heartbeat if I had any money at all. Thanks for all the advice, y'all will definitely know if I end up with it.

Relief and disappointment at the same time, he doesn't want Eva that badly.
